Duende

According to Philippine lore, mounds of soil or anthills are not just nests for insects like termites and ants. Would you even believe that it contained a spirit of some kind?
In Filipino culture, these creatures are described as goblins, elves, or dwarves - short of stature and often old or shriveled, with beards and hats of varying colors. In more modern times, they are said to reside in homes or mounds in forests or places with many trees. They’re very protective of their homes, if you end up destroying one of these mounds, willingly or by accident, it doesn’t matter what your intention was. You will feel the wrath of these small creatures if you come across one. Whether they use their powers for good or mischief depends on how they are treated by the humans who dwell near them.
Elders instructed children to always excuse themselves whenever they’re passing by this soil formation, or even in secluded areas where trees and shadows create a mystical ambiance.
Duendes are known mainly for the magical ability to make someone who hurt or offended them suffer from unusual diseases ranging from skin rashes, inflammations, and fevers that can’t be cured by any medical interventions. It is said that some duende’s don’t inflict bad luck, some can be positive, but it solely depends on you, or their mood. On the good side of things, if there is a lost child, they’re encouraged to ask duende’s for guidance.
Although they're seen as mischievous spirits, they seem to tolerate or be kind to children alone. One simple way to avoid them is to simply not be in that area, it is not much you can do. Be careful where you step.
