  • Jack The Ripper

< Back Jack The Ripper The most famous unknown serial killer of all time Jack the Ripper. Perhaps the most infamous serial killer of all time. Hundreds of suspects have been named for this case and it has baffled investigators and ripperologists alike for over 100 years The year is 1888. The stage, the shadowy and bog-filled streets of the East End of London. More specifically, the Whitechapel District, an area with a proclivity for violence and crime amongst the backdrop of poverty. But suddenly, a string of murders terrorize the public in a way never seen before. The culprit, a mad man with no clear motive. The world's most notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper. While most believe the Ripper claimed the lives of only five, now referred to as "The Canonical Five," others believe the Ripper claimed the lives of up to 11 women. All five of the canonical victims were prostitutes, as many women in the Whitechapel District had to turn to prostitution as a way to survive. The morbid intrigue is not a recent development. At the time of the murders, literacy was increasing amongst the general population. On August 31, 1888 at 3:40 a.m., the body of Mary Ann Nichols was found in Buck's Row in Whitechapel. The body was discovered by a man named Charles Cross, who claims he was walking along Buck's Row when he noticed a bundle towards the western end. Another man named Robert Paul approached the body with Cross. Police would eventually arrive on the scene. Mary Ann Nichols was found on her back, her throat severely slashed, and she was disemboweled. It was determined she had only been dead for about a half hour, meaning the killer was likely nearby when Cross first saw the body. On September 8, 1888, the body of Annie Chapman was found at 29 Hanbury Street. Her body was discovered by a man named John Davis, an elderly resident of the 29 Hanbury Street building. Her throat was cut and this time the violence escalated in that the murderer took her womb. Dr. George Baxter Phillips was serving as the divisional police surgeon at the time and proposed the idea that the killer had anatomical knowledge by the manner in which Annie Chapman's womb was removed. Later that month on September 27, 1888, the Central News Agency receives a letter from the apparent killer. It reads; "Dear Boss, I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they won't fix me just yet. I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about being on the right track. That joke about Leather Apron gave me real fits. I am down on whores and shant quit ripping them till I do get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. How can they catch me now? I love my work and want to start again. You will soon hear of me with my funny little games. I saved some of the proper red stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the last job to write with, but it went thick like glue and I can't use it. Red ink is fit enough I hope. Ha. Ha. The next job I do I shall clip the lady's ears off and send to the police officer just for jolly wouldn't you. Keep this letter back till I do a bit more work, then give it out straight. My knife's so nice and sharp I want to get to work right away if I get a chance. Good luck. Yours truly, Jack the Ripper. Don't mind giving me the trade name. Wasn't good enough to post this before I got all the red ink off my hands. Curse it. No luck yet. They say I'm a doctor now. Ha. Ha." This letter wasn't released to the public until October 1st and many believe that it was fabricated by a journalist, but regardless, it made its way to the papers. Once in the eyes of the public, the name stuck, and the killer from that point on went by the now famous moniker, Jack the Ripper. Three days later on September 30 at 1:00 a.m., the body of Elizabeth Stride was found on Berner Street by a man named Louis Diemschutz. Only her throat was cut, which led police to believe that the murder was interrupted when Diemschutz approached. Right now we're walking up on the site of the second murder, Elizabeth Stride. Determined that she was dead when examined around 1:15 a.m. Shockingly, only 45 minutes after the discovery of Elizabeth Stride, another body was found in Mitre Square, just west of the Stride murder. A woman named Catherine Eddowes was the second victim in the same night. Her body was severely mutilated, including her face. Her uterus was removed, as well as her left kidney. It's here that police would discover one of the few solid clues in the entire case, a piece of Catherine Eddowes apron found near the scene of the crime. The apron was found by Alfred Long in the doorway of an apartment block near Goulston Street, a nearby street east of the Eddowes murder site. Near this apron a message was written in chalk that read, "The Juwes are the men that will not be blame for nothing." A sign of the anti-Semitism that was common in the area. However, the crucial detail of this clue is the fact that it was found east of the Eddowes murder site, in the direction of Elizabeth Stride's murder site, the murder that occurred just 45 minutes prior. This perplexing decision could mean that the killer willingly entered an area that was swarming with cops. Aside from demonstrating the killer's evasive abilities, this could suggest the killer lived in this East London area, as it possibly explains the motive for entering a dangerous situation. Nearly a month later, on November 9, 1888, the body of the fifth and final canonical victim, Mary Kelly, was found at 13 Millers Court in her bed by her landlord's assistant, who was seeking rent. This murder was by far the most gruesome as her body was disemboweled and "virtually skinned down." We could be actually at the place of residence of Jack himself. Here's the landlord on the state of the body. "The sight that we saw I cannot drive away from my mind. It looked more like the work of a devil than of a man." And with that we arrive at the end of the five canonical victims, but as stated before, some believe there could be up to 11 victims. With Jack the Ripper's reign of terror, one should wonder if anybody caught a glimpse of this monster, and it would seem that people did. When aggregating eyewitness testimonies of those who believed they saw the Ripper, a rough outline of the killer can be visualized. It can be assumed that he was between 25 to 35 years old, roughly 5'5 to 5'7, stocky, with a fair complexion, and a mustache. Allegedly, he was seen wearing a dark overcoat and a dark hat. The Scotland Yard's Violent Crime Command team has said that Jack the Ripper, who one could call evil incarnated, could be described in appearance as "perfectly sane, frighteningly normal, and yet capable of extraordinary cruelty." There have been multiple theories on who Jack the Ripper was, but none were proven due to the lack of evidence. For over 100 years, the mystery of Jack the Ripper has continued to fascinate, confound, and infuriate the public. Perhaps one day we will have the means to solve the crime. Or perhaps this famous case will be yet another victim to time. But, for now, the age old question will continue to persist. Who was Jack the Ripper? Previous Next

  • Duende

< Back Duende Learn about little elf-like creatures that can possess and inflict bad luck. According to Philippine lore, mounds of soil or anthills are not just nests for insects like termites and ants. Would you even believe that it contained a spirit of some kind? In Filipino culture, these creatures are described as goblins, elves, or dwarves - short of stature and often old or shriveled, with beards and hats of varying colors. In more modern times, they are said to reside in homes or mounds in forests or places with many trees. They’re very protective of their homes, if you end up destroying one of these mounds, willingly or by accident, it doesn’t matter what your intention was. You will feel the wrath of these small creatures if you come across one. Whether they use their powers for good or mischief depends on how they are treated by the humans who dwell near them. Elders instructed children to always excuse themselves whenever they’re passing by this soil formation, or even in secluded areas where trees and shadows create a mystical ambiance. Duendes are known mainly for the magical ability to make someone who hurt or offended them suffer from unusual diseases ranging from skin rashes, inflammations, and fevers that can’t be cured by any medical interventions. It is said that some duende’s don’t inflict bad luck, some can be positive, but it solely depends on you, or their mood. On the good side of things, if there is a lost child, they’re encouraged to ask duende’s for guidance. Although they're seen as mischievous spirits, they seem to tolerate or be kind to children alone. One simple way to avoid them is to simply not be in that area, it is not much you can do. Be careful where you step. Previous Next

  • Hachishakusama

< Back Hachishakusama We’ve heard of Slenderman, but have you heard about the tall, slender woman? There's a Japanese urban legend that involves a strangely tall woman named Hachishakusama, which means “8 feet tall”. Those who have seen her suggested that she wears a long white dress, a straw hat with long black hair. She’s a mysterious spirit who abducts children who hear her strange sound: “Po…Po…Po…Po…Po…” Hachishakusama, in order to catch her victims, she would stalk the children for some days, she will then make her sound to catch their attention, she will take them away from the family then murders them. The Hachishakusama urban legend first came out when a strange story was posted to a Japanese website. It was originally written in japanese, however, here is a rough english translation: My grandparents live in Japan. Every summer, my parents would take me there for holiday to visit them. They lived in a small village and they had a big backyard which I always enjoyed playing in. The last time I saw them was the summer of when I was 8 years old. One day, I was playing outside while my grandparents were inside. I was playing by myself and was laying down on the grass. Just as I was able to get up, I heard a strange sound. “Po…Po…Po…” I didn't know what it was and it was hard to determine where it was coming from. I was looking around, hoping to find the source of this noise. That's when I noticed something on top of the hedges that enclosed the backyard. It was a straw hat, but it didn’t look to be resting on it, it was behind it. That's where the sound was coming from. The hat began to move, and it had stopped at a gap in the hedge and I could see a face peering through. It was a woman. But she but the hedges were high, almost 8 feet tall. I was surprised at how tall the woman was. I was wondering if she was wearing stilts or tall shoes. Then, a second later, she walked off, with the strange noise disappearing with her. Bewildered, I got up and went back into the house. My grandparents were in the kitchen drinking tea, I sat down and after a while I told them what I had seen. They weren't paying attention to me at first, until I mentioned that distinctive sound. They froze. Grandma's eyes grew wide and covered her mouth with her hand. Grandpa’s face became very serious and grabbed me by the arm. “This is very important.” he said intensely, “how tall was she?” “As tall as the garden hegde.'' I replied, starting to get scared. My grandfather started to bombard me with questions. “Where were you standing? What did she do? Did she see you?” I tried naswerignhis questions as best as I could. But then he rushed to the hallway and made a phone call. I couldn’t hear what he was saying but then hung up and walked out the house. “Grandma, what's going on?” “There's something dangerous abducting children in this area. We call it, Hachishakusama. She takes the appearance of a very tall woman and says: ‘Po…Po…Po…’ in a deep voice.” A long time ago, it was captured by monks and they managed to confine it in a ruined building on the outskirts of the village. They trapped it by using four jizo, small religious statues that were placed at the north, south, east and west of the ruins, so that it could not escape. But somehow, it did. The last time it appeared was 15 years ago. My grandmother said that anyone who saw it was destined to die within a few days. It all sounded strange and crazy, I wasn't sure what to believe. Just then, my grandpa came back, but with an old woman who called herself Kasan. They took me upstairs to my bedroom and started covering my windows with newspapers with ruins written all over them. Kasan placed small bowls of salt in the 4 corners of the room and a small Buddha figure in the center. “Soon the sun will be setting, so listen carefully. You must stay in this room until 7:30 tomorrow morning. Do not open this door for any reason.” She placed a bucket in my hands. “Not even to use the restroom.” They then left the room and I locked the door after them. I couldn't believe this was happening, was I really going to die in a few days? Sooner or later I fell asleep, yet I was awakened around 1 a.m. by a tapping sound. It's probably just a tree or something. Then came a knock on the door, and I heard my grandpa's voice. Without thinking, I rushed towards the door, and placed my hand on the handle. But something didn’t feel right. I looked at the bowls of salt in the room, all 4 of them had turned balck. I heard the strange sound again and the tapping continued. I knelt in front of the Buddha and prayed. Eventually the noises stopped, I checked my watch, it was 7:30 a.m. I carefully opened the door and ran to my grandparents. We all got in a van and headed to the airport. Apparently there were those who managed to escape Hachishakusama, as long as they never stepped foot into Japan again. So 2 years ago when my grandpa got sick, he refused to let me visit him. He even left strict instructions in his will to not let me attend his funeral. I can't believe this monster prevented me from saying goodbye to him. So when my grandmother called a few days ago to tell me that she was diagnosed with cancer, I wasn't going to let her stop me from visiting. “It's been 10 years grandma, and nothing has happened to me. We don't even know this thing is real. I'm not going to let it stop me from visiting you.” “If you say so dear.” “I love you grandma. I'll see you soon.” “Po… Po…Po..” Previous Next

  • Dybbuk Box

< Back Dybbuk Box A wine cabinet with a unknown identity. The famous Dybbuk box is a wine cabinet claimed to be haunted by a dybbuk, a concept from Jewish mythology. This first came to life when someone wrote their story, and it all started with a purchase. The story goes that he purchased an old wine cabinet from the granddaughter of a recently deceased Holocaust survivor named Havela, who escaped Nazi-occupied Poland. As Mannis paid for the cabinet, Havela’s granddaughter said, “I see you bought the Dybbuk Box.” he didn’t know the term but the granddaughter stated that it should never be opened, if he did, bad things would happen. She also said that it contained a dybbuk; in Jewish folklore, an evil, restless spirit that possesses the living. Mannis gave the box to his mother, Ida, on Halloween. Ida describes feeling a cold breeze from the box as she opened its doors, then experiencing “pure evil” coming out. She says she immediately had a stroke. Then he began seeing what he later described as “shadow things” in his peripheral vision. Wanting to get rid of it, he listed it on eBay in 2003. Since then, the Dybbuk Box has captured the popular imagination, becoming the stuff of internet legend. In 2011, a subsequent owner of Mannis’ box, Jason Haxton, released a book about the box. he details what befell him, everything from bleeding eyes to random choking attacks to, yes, recurring dreams of a creepy old woman within a few days. Like other cursed objects and the paranormal, the box inspired movies. In 2012, the most prominent movies about the Dybbuk Box are The Possession, produced by filmmaker Sam Raimi. Both Mannis and Haxton were production consultants on the film. Over the past five years, dybbuk fever has hit an all-time high thanks to one man: famed ghost hunter Zak Bagans, the host of Ghost Adventures. In 2016, he featured both Mannis and Haxton for an episode in which he brings the box to his Haunted Museum in Las Vegas. Today it’s one of the museum’s highlights, touted as “The World’s Most Haunted Object.” Previous Next

  • The Slit Mouthed Woman

< Back The Slit Mouthed Woman Am I Pretty? Kuchisake-Onna is the ghost of a woman who was mutilated and has come back to wreak vengeance on the world. Her name comes from the deep, bloody gash which runs across her face, grinning from ear to ear. During the Japanese Heian period, around a thousand years ago, a samurai was married to a beautiful woman. She was the object of everyone's affection, and she knew it. She would walk around town and ask those who stared, "Am I pretty?" The samurai was not happy with the attention she was eliciting, and when he discovered she was being unfaithful, He wanted her to pay. One day, armed with a knife, he attacked her. He pressed the blade into her cheek, and slit her mouth ear to ear. Leaving her with a bloody, twisted grin, "Who will think you're beautiful now?" Soon after she died, and returned to earth as an angry spirit named Kuchisake-Onna, The Slit-Mouthed Woman. In the late 1970s, a countrywide panic broke out after numerous people claimed to have encountered Kuchisake-Onna. More police officers were assigned to night duty. Students were required to walk home in pairs after school. People took extra precautions to avoid this vengeful spirit because any encounter would be deadly. If you were walking alone, she will appear around a corner, wearing a trench coat and a surgical mask. In Japan, her attire would not seem out of the ordinary. Since it was common for people to wear such masks to prevent the spread of germs. You will assume she is just an ordinary woman. Then, she will approach you and ask, "Am I pretty?" If you say, "No". She will pull out her long pair of scissors and kill you on the spot. And if you say, "Yes". She will bring her face closer, and peel back her mask to reveal her disfigured mouth. "I am pretty now?" No matter how you respond afterward, your fate will remain the same. Over the years, clever young people claim to have outsmarted Kuchisake-Onna by delivering quick, confusing answers, or by throwing money or hard candy at them. A few school children discovered a way to trick Kuchisake-Onna. When she asks her question, responding with an ambiguous, "So-So" would confuse her long enough for you to make your escape. Do you dare to try your luck? Previous Next

  • Mirror On Myrtles Plantation

< Back Mirror On Myrtles Plantation A mirror can catch things, but can they trap them as well? The Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, LA bills itself as “one of America’s most haunted homes.” Like people, inanimate objects can be plagued by the paranormal. Theres been many legends surrounding the historic property, the tale of the haunted mirror is one of the most famous. According to popular legend, a slave named Chloe baked an oleander-laced cake and poisoned three members of the prominent Woodruff family. Some say Chloe purposely killed the family, while others insist she only meant to make them ill. In any event, Sara and the children died and are now trapped inside the old mirror, or so the stories go. Visitors from the plantation report seeing handprints on the glass, prints allegedly belonging to the slain Woodruffs. Strange “drip” marks also run the length of the mirror, and no amount of cleaning can remove the residue. Visitors have also spotted figures in old-fashioned clothing lurking inside the mirror’s warped glass. Other than that, it may be something else that’s in this mirror. Why? There has been no records show a slave by that name and one of the Woodruff daughters survived well into adulthood. The other daughter perished from yellow fever, as did Sara Woodruff. So, what’s really going on in this mirror? Previous Next
